Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) - cause and treatment

The symptoms of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) include obsessive hand washing, constant checking and an unnatural compulsion towards neat and tidiness. So what causes OCD and how can it be treated?

Past traumas carry the seed of OCD

Different schools of thought exist as to what causes OCD these include disharmony in the neurotransmitter serotonin, which regulates anxiety in our body. I would like to offer up another opinion:

Our bodies have energy lines that run through them. The ancient Chinese mapped these lines over 5,000 years ago. Our body also has an energy field that surrounds it. When a major negative event happens to us our body goes into shock which in turn saves us from experiencing the event through our senses. We ‘get over it’ and carry on with our lives but the event has left a mental scar. More importantly, this mental scar or trauma exists in our energy field and the anxiety felt repeats itself over and over leading to unwanted negative symptoms like the obsessive hand washing, checking and tidiness.

OCD treatment - the holistic way
It is important to treat OCD from a holistic point of view. Since the original trauma (or traumas) unwanted habits may have formed so to just get rid of the original anxiety and expect these learned habitual patterns to go away as well all at the same time is probably asking for too much.

So how do we get rid of the original trauma? If we know what caused the original trauma then we have a head start, if we don’t then we can work with symptoms that will lead us there through forgotten memories and sensations in the body.

Once we begin working on the anxiety behind the OCD we can then set positive goals. To recover from OCD it’s better to set small, achievable goals. A large, dynamic goal could seem too great to achieve. When we work on the anxiety and set small goals we allow ourselves to move forward, each goal should be tailored towards individual needs.

It’s also important to remember your victories, however small they may seem, either make a mental note of them or better still write them down in an personal ‘OCD recovery journal’. Then, be grateful for this chance to work on yourself in this way and write those words of gratitude down too.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder can be a very debilitating mental illness but it need not be and by seeking right help, you definitely can recover and lead a normal, healthy life again.
